Seeing the Father

Understanding the Character of God Through the Life of Christ

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

We have made knowing God more difficult than it needs to be. Jesus very directly tells us that if we have seen him, we have seen the Father. Jesus is the exact representation of the invisible God. Many of us have no problem seeing Jesus as loving but many have a difficult time seeing the Father as merciful and kind. We typically see God as angry and awaiting judgment but Jesus as the loving part of God.

The truth is, you can’t attribute anything to the Father that you don’t see in the life of Jesus. Now that the new covenant has been established through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the way God now relates to people has totally and completely changed! Jesus is the very expression of what that looks like. If you want to see God, look at Jesus.
