Understanding the Teachings of Jesus

Discover how Jesus masterfully used the Law to reveal our absolute need for him

Undeestanding the Teachings of Jesus.jpg

Do you get confused when you read the teachings of Jesus? In this series you'll discover how Jesus masterfully used the Law to reveal our absolute need for him. Understand how to filter the Bible through the finished work of Christ and your place in him. We all have preconceptions and theological constructs we use to approach the Bible, I want to help you approach it with a focus on Jesus.

When Jesus said this...

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
— Matthew 5

He was doing this...

19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
— Galatians 3

To bring us to this...

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all (who believe) are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
— Romans 3

So should we throw out the Law?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
— Matthew 5:17

NO! We just keep it in it's right place, fulfilled by Jesus and it now serves as wisdom and instruction for us.
