The Creative and Authoritative Power of the Spoken Word

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”(that is, the word of faith which we preach)
— Romans 10:8

Let's talk about the Word (logos) of God. The Bible, yes, but in a broader sense, I want to talk about God's Word (logos) that created everything, then became flesh and dwelt among us, and now is in our hearts and mouths.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:1-3

Clearly Jesus is the Word, and all things were made by him, for him, and through him (Colossians 1:16). Picture this aspect of the trinity creating in the beginning in Genesis 1; Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters." And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear." Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind." And it was so. And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years. And God said, "Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky." And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so.

The Word of God spoke and created. That may sound a bit strange, "the Word of God spoke,' but keep in mind John 1: "He was in the beginning with God."

Before Jesus entered into a human body as the son of Mary, the Jewish carpenter, Jesus, he was the Word of God, the agent of creation.

So Jesus is the Word, and he speaks the Word, which creates, heals, corrects, forgives, condemns, and many other things. Jesus, the Word made flesh, God in the flesh (all the same thing) went about speaking and healing people because his words were spirit and they are life. The living Word inside the man Jesus (who is also God) interacted in this world and made sick people well and dead people alive, multiplied food, calmed storms, taught wisdom, rebuked self-righteousness, and forgave, all with words.

The living Word of God, in human form, with the power and authority of God, spoke the Word, and it changed things to align with the will of God.

The Word Is In You

Then Paul teaches that this same Word, the creative, authoritative, powerful logos of God is in us.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19

Not only is it in us spiritually, it is in our mouths to speak and preach.

But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the Word of faith which we preach) Romans 10:8

God's creative, authoritative, powerful logos that created everything in the beginning, manifested as Jesus, and came out of the mouth of Jesus is also in us to do the same things it did out of the mouth of Jesus.

Will we create a universe, planets, and animals? No. But the same Word that created those things still has authority over them to align them with God's will.

Consider this story from Matthew 8:5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." 7 And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." 8 The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it.10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour.

You can do the same thing because the same authoritative, creative Word is in your mouth.

Jesus IS the Word of God and speaks the Word of God. When He does, it's like sending a message to the world that the Word created to rearrange itself according to His will. Speaking the Word of God is like instructing the material world on how it should operate. And because it was all created by that Word, the Word has authority over it to command it. That same authoritative, creative Word is in our mouths, which we preach.

So what should we preach to ensure the Word is creative and powerful when it comes out of our mouths? The Gospel!

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek. 17 For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

The Word that we speak is the Gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, and it IS the power of God unto salvation (soteria): deliverance, restoration, rescue, health restoration, provision.

God is the Word, and the Word is God. God placed His spirit in us, which means His Word is in us. As we preach the Gospel, the good news of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ carries with it God's power and intent to carry out and establish His will.

What are you speaking over your relationships, finances, health, children, friends, and ministry? The Word of God, or something else?

Speak the Word, even when you don't see how it can change anything, speak the Word, preach the Gospel, and have confidence that God's powerful Word in your mouth can affect and change things to align with the will of God, which just so happens to be, "on earth as it is in Heaven."

Speak the Word!!
